Trendy Tuesday: A Summer Trend Trifecta!

Trendy Tuesday is back this week! And I guess I left it alone for too long, because today I not only want to share one trend with you, I want to talk about a whole handful of summer looks that I am super excited about.
Here is my Trendy Tuesday top three...

The Full Midi Skirt

First of all, my absolute favourite trend of this season is the full midi skirt. If you haven't yet noticed this 'new' skirt length in the stores, I'll describe it for you as an updated and modern 1950's classic full skirt. The midi skirt of this summer hits just below the knee and sits right on your natural waist (the smallest part of your torso, usually right above your belly button). The length and shape of these skirts are both flattering and classic, making this a trend that is incredibly easy to wear. Dress your skirt down by pairing it with a cotton t-shirt or tank, make it workplace cool with a white button down, or go glam by adding a lace blouse or silky camisole.

Find this pleated midi skirt at Forever 21 Canada, for only $29.80.

The Crop Top

This is a fun summer trend that doesn't need to be as scary as it sounds! When you hear 'crop top', you may think this is a trend for teens, tweens and tineey tiny gals only, but done properly, anyone (okay, anyone under 50) can feel confident sporting these tiny tops.

Actually, one great way to wear the crop top of this summer is to pair it with a midi skirt! When shopping for a crop top, look for one that falls at or below your belly button (anything higher can be left for the teenagers), then wear your crop top with a skirt or pant that is high waisted (like the midi skirt that clasps at your natural waist). The look you'll achieve will be less belly baring and more a slight flash of skin. You'll show off just an inch or two of your upper tummy (or nothing at all), a classy and high fashion way to bare a little bit of skin this summer.

Find this versatile t-shirt crop top at Aritzia, on sale for $15.

Sheer Fabrics (and sheer cut out details)

This is a trend that started last summer is back for another go! Sheer blouses, and dresses and tops with sheer or mesh cut-out details took hold ever so slightly last year and this summer season they seem to be everywhere. Like the crop top, this trend can be intimidating, but it isn't hard to wear!

To wet your toes with this trend, look for tops that have a knit front and sheer back, or find a cotton blouse with sheer cut-out detailing around the hem or neckline. Like this peplum top from Forever 21

The sheer fabric around the collar gives the illusion of showing of some skin, while the top is still comfortable and easy to wear. Sexy and simple!

If you want to go all out with this trend, shop for a top that is fully sheer. And, no, I'm not talking about an all mesh top, that will never be in! Pair your sheer blouse (think soft, thin cotton, silk or lace) with a demure bra or bralette that provides full coverage for your cleavage. With sheer blouses you're showing off a lot, I draw the line at the 'girls' to keep things classy.

This off-white sheer cotton top from Zara, is $49.90 and could be paired with many different under garments for a variety of looks. I would wear it with a nude or pink bra during the day for a clean and beachy look. And in the evening I would go with a black bra, sexy and understated.

Zara Canada has lots of great sheer looks for women this summer, and I couldn't resist posting a few more items below.

Remember, if you're absolutely not comfortable showing off skin, you can still purchase that gorgeous sheer blouse. Just pair it with a tank top or cami of a similar or contrasting colour and create a look that works for you!

Here's my latest summer outfit...
...it was the inspiration for this post!

It took me awhile to find the perfect midi skirt, but when I saw this lilac hued linen piece from Zara, I knew my search had ended. My sheer lace crop top was a $30 steal at Forever 21 and I've paired it with a simple black bralette that is also from Forever 21 ($6). I'll wear this little number with my grey snakeskin peep toe flats during the day and a kitten heel in the evening.

  1. Yay for Trendy Tuesday! I think that rose skirt with the black polk-a-dots that we bought is a bit longer than than a midi skirt but I've still gotten a lot of compliments on it. It makes me feel trendy but at the same time, I think it's a pretty classic piece. I must take you shopping more often! ;)
